Washington State has adopted changes in the funding of public education. Taking effect in 2018, the state property tax for common schools will be increased to $2.70 per $1,000 of assessed value, which is an increase from approximately $1.90/$1,000. Taking effect in 2019, the school district levy lid will be based on the lesser of $2,500 per student or $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed value, rather than the percentage of each district’s basic education allocation funding from the State. The effect of these changes will be felt across the state. While all will see an increase from the state tax rate increase in 2018, some property owners should see some relief in 2019 when the second measure comes into effect.
