The mayor of the City of Houston is asking the Houston City Council to impose a temporary one year property tax increase to help pay for a portion of the Hurricane Harvey Recovery Effort costs that will not be covered by FEMA. Increases above the revenue cap are allowed for in instances where an emergency is declared. The city Council will vote on the proposal on October 18th. This would become effective January 2018, and would raise the City’s mill rate (per 1,000) from approximately 5.864 to 6.387.
